Morro Rock

Well, here we are at our favorite place in the USA, Morro Bay, California. As we look straight ahead, we see the Morro Rock  protruding over 500 feet out of the Pacific Ocean. Just to the right of the rock we can see the huge expanse of the Pacific Ocean. We can see the surf from our RV.
We visited ‘our’ church today. It was nice to be welcomed by so many friends. Then we had lunch at the Cavalier Restaurant. We feel like things are ‘normal’ when we are here. The Hearst Castle area has always seemed like home to us. Perhaps we especially like it because on our first visit to the castle, Nate was with us. He came here a couple of times with us, so this area has been ‘touched’ by him. We were scheduled to bring the whole family here on Presidents’ weekend, 1983, but Nate was killed just the week before. We came anyway. We were all in a daze, but we can sort of remember our trip. Marilyn’s mom and dad brought their travel trailer, and Matt stayed with them. Mike and Mellyn and we stayed in a motel near the state park in San Simeon. We all enjoyed the castle tours, but the pictures we took that year show just how dazed we all were.

Farmers Insurance blimp above Morro Rock

Now we just feel refreshed here. We think this is one place where we could live and feel content; however, there are some hurdles we’re not sure how to jump. For one thing, it is doubtful we could afford to live in Cambria, but if we lived in Morro Bay, we would be about 20 miles from the church where we are most comfortable. The town the church is in is a very wealthy town and they don’t even have a senior living facility. Apparently if people need help, they just hire live-in help rather than moving to a facility, which we could not afford to do, but we sure love the area. Our dream is to find an apartment we can afford with a view of the ocean. We know, we know; we’re  not asking much, now are we?
We went to the Bible study last week that we have always attended. It was great to be back with all of our friends.
Last week, we both visited the ER in SLO. Glen had flu-like symptoms and Marilyn had a hacking cough that would not leave. The ER gave us a private room for just the two of us, so for a while, we had matching beds and matching gowns! We both received excellent care and lots of attention. Glen got an IV which included medication for nausea and an EKG. Marilyn got a chest x-ray and a prescription for antibiotics and a diagnosis of Acute Bronchitis. Our nurse was very kind and we soon discovered that a dear friend of hers had just lost a son to an overdose. Of course, Marilyn gave her our card and recommended her book which I am sure she will purchase quickly. We always think our ‘divine appointments’ are amazing. It shows that there are hurting people everywhere and if we are willing, God will give us opportunities to share our story and hopefully help.

Missile Launch

Last week we watched a missile be launched at Vandenburg AFB. Then we took a walk on the beach and saw a blimp as it was gliding past the rock. There is always something going on here. Marilyn has been trying to walk in hopes that walking would help work the pain from her feet. At the Bible study last week, Glen reminded the attendees of the movie, “My Left Foot” and suggested that the title be a reminder to pray for Marilyn’s left foot! We are mindful that the doctor said recovery could take six months, and we are only half way there.

Lowell and Shirley viewing the monarchs

On January 24, our Redlands pastor and his wife drove from Redlands to visit us. We went immediately to see the elephant seals. Shirley is always so fascinated with the seals.

Monarch Butterflys

On Tuesday we visited the seals again, and we drove to Pismo Beach to observe the Monarch butterflies that gather at the same place every year. It is interesting that several generations were born and died since the butterflies were at Pismo last year, but somehow the new butterflies know to come to Pismo. Marilyn believes that God whispers to them “Go South. I have a great place all ready for you.”
Well, much to our surprise, Marilyn has a Blog! We want to thank our grandson Christian for constructing the blog for her. It may eventually take the place of this newsletter, but we need to get it organized first. If you would like to check it out and see if we have added something new, please go to http://marilynheavilin.com/wordpress/ .
We are thankful for the beautiful sunny and warm weather we are having in this area, but we are very mindful of the cold and stormy weather others are having in various parts of the USA. Please include them in your prayers as you continue to pray for Marilyn’s cousin Al and her sister-in-law Karen and also for our personal health and safety.

Much love in Him,

Glen and Marilyn
