May 2011

The theme of this newsletter should be ‘Wrapping It Up and Moving On.’ We left Redlands the day after Easter. The week prior to Easter was rather hectic as we tried to say an official goodbye to many friends. We did get to visit with the Lindens, the Culpeppers, the Neases, the Clarks, the Hicoks, the Stucks and Wayne Scott. We attended our favorite service of the year, Maundy Thursday.

Panda at San Diego Zoo

The week before that, we took a vacation and drove to San Diego where we visited the Wild Animal Park, the San Diego Zoo, and Sea World. We also had the privilege of attending Shadow Mountain Community Church where David Jeremiah is the pastor. We also had the privilege of visiting Ron and Shirley James. Ron was Glen’s boss at Campus Crusade for Christ. We hadn’t seen Ron and Shirley in more than 30 years.

We quickly discovered the advantage of renting electric carts at the parks. We walked through the zoo, taking the trams when we could, but got carts at Sea World and Wild Animal Park.

Al Cronkright

Our hearts became heavy with sorrow at the passing of Marilyn’s cousin, Al. Not being able to be there for her cousin Sharon was especially difficult for Marilyn. Al was a special man, a strong Christian, and a great husband and father. Since retirement, Sharon and Al donated their time as volunteers for S.O.W.E.R.S (Servants on Wheels Ever Ready). Please remember to pray for Sharon as she adjusts to life without Al.

Steve and Laurie

The Park

Before we left Redlands we had the privilege of visiting the backyard ‘park’ of Laurie and Steve Hicok. Here is Laurie’s description of their back yard. “The east side , which is the longest, has 27 vinyl panels that are 8′ each so about 216′ and the back wrought iron section is about 110′ and the west side wrought iron section is 98′. The west side also has vinyl panels starting along the back of the house and going alongside the walkway to the front yard.”

JAZZY

The mascot of the backyard is Steve and Laurie’s precious little Pekingese, Jazzy. Of course Marilyn is very partial to that breed. Jazzy is beautiful and so well behaved that Marilyn contemplated putting Jazzy in her pocket, but resisted the temptation.  The backyard is so large, it is quite difficult to get a picture of the whole area. We were so impressed, but we do realize that the yard represents hours of hard work.

We are now traveling East. We left Redlands on April 25 where it was very warm and the gas was $4.09 per gallon. We are currently near Albuquerque, NM where it is cool and gas is $3.69 per gallon. It is actually predicted to snow tonight, so we may be here a day or two.

We plan to visit our friends in Nebraska, South Dakota Kansas, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and we plan to arrive in Whiting, NJ by the end of June.

Handsome Caleb, all set for the prom

Our grandson Caleb attended a prom this weekend, and we got to see the pictures via the internet within minutes. We are so thankful we live in this world of computers, cell phones, DVRs, digital cameras, Skype, e-mail and many other digital items.

Beverly, Rex, and canine friends

We stayed two days in Phoenix and had dinner with our dear friend Diana Cunningham.

The next morning we met one of Glen’s former high school classmates, Beverly and her husband Rex, for breakfast. We also got to meet their little dogs.

Then we got to visit Marilyn’s cousins Ed and Louise who live in Surprise, AZ.

Please continue to pray for our safety and good health.

Blessings,

Glen and Marilyn Heavilin
